What a sad day for Egypt and for everyone who loves this country. What happened?
How is it possible that one of the world’s greatest and oldest civilization is facing such pain? Such confusion, and hate. Did it happen in the name of power, greed or is once again religion responsible?
Whatever the reason is, it does not help the wounded man, the dead daughter, or a mother mourning her dead son – how can this pain be stopped??? The images we see on TV – I know they are not always impartial – give a feeling of helplessness. This morning a friend of mine in Egypt posted this on his Facebook page with the caption
To all my friends in the USA – this is our turn – I want your support
How can I support them? – How can an individual support them? What can we do ? Effectively?? Because even in the USA our individual power to influence our government is more limited than we like to admit.
But using our Facebook, Twitter and other Social Medias it might be a comfort to the Egyptian people to let them know that we care – that we pray for them – that our thoughts are with them – and remind them that once this is over there is an Afterlife – our empathy might help to dry a tear here and there.
Today, a week ago at exactly this time I stood in front of Queen Nefertiti, in The Neue Museum in Berlin, Germany.
There are things in life we wish for – and keep wishing for, and when they comes true one feels transfixed by the reality that was for so long just a dream, just a fantasy — but that morning it was not only a picture in a school corridor, or a faded image in an old book, or a postcard someone sent years ago – there SHE was…… standing in the middle of a small rotunda. The lights were dim, and her beautiful face filled the space.
It was early in the morning, everything was quiet, only the four guards protecting the glass case stood to attention. I took my time – I wanted to make the most of this moment.
I walked around her several times
– how beautiful the details are and the colors still so fresh after thousands of years – is it really that long? Seeing the serene expression and the far away look in her eye I wondered what she is really trying to say.
Maybe she wants to confirm that PERFECTION does exist!!! And that there really is an AFTERLIFE?

Already as a little girl, long before I knew where Egypt is or what it is, I saw pictures of Queen Nefertiti hanging in our school. She was the wife of Pharaoh Akhenaten.
Of course, we learned about her in school, and when many years later I went to Egypt – excuse my ignorance – I thought I was going to see her – but I was wrong. She does not live in Egypt, she lives in Berlin, Germany since 1912. How come?
In 1912 a German Expedition, lead by archaeologist Ludwig Borchard, found the bust of Nefertiti. The rule at the time was that every archaeological discovery had to be brought before the Egyptian Antiquities Authority who decided what was allowed to leave the country. But Ludwig Borchard had fallen so madly in love with Queen Nefertiti, that he found a way to smuggle her out of Egypt. He brought her to Berlin where she has been a major attraction for the last 100 years —- and during that time the world has come to pay homage. Nefertiti’s bust is regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces in the world.
Having said all this, I feel very happy that tomorrow I am on my way to Berlin where my priority is visiting Queen Nefertiti – her name means “The Beautiful One has come.”

KARNAK TEMPLE never loses its magic for me and I can not imagine a visit to Egypt without walking again through the GREAT HYPOSTYLE HALL. It is a humbling and exhilarating experience.
Humbling because when gently touching one of the columns my hand was but a tiny speck on the mighty structure telling me that I am only a grain of sand in a world that was there long before me and will be there long after.
Exhilarating because passing through the mighty columns there is only silence – a silence that speaks with a loud voice about Egypt’s past splendor, and about how high man can rise – a voice I can never forget.
The GREAT HYPOSTYLE HALL was built by Seti I – Father of Ramses II (1290 – 1279 B.C.) It has 134 columns. The 12 largest ones are 70 feet high and the remaining 122 are 40 feet high. But these numbers don’t tell story. You will only know the whole story once you have been there yourself
The universal appeal of jeans has made them a beloved match for the HIGAB (the headscarf) worn by many Egyptian girls today

Beauty, peace, serenity, and charm – how can an artist, a human being put so much loveliness in a stone face?
She is part of the Avenue of Sphinxes between Karnak and Luxor, which in ancient times connected the two.
— but there is not only beauty in stone – this beautiful face belongs to the wife of a friend of mine in Luxor
