DOWNTON ABBEY’S CONNECTION TO EGYPT

Like millions of infatuated followers of DOWNTON ABBEY, now in its 4th Season, I am glued to my television set on Sunday nights.

During a recent interview of the present owners, The Earl of Carnarvon and Lady Carnarvon, they talked about the history of Highclere Castle ( Downton Abbey) and the Fifth Earl, George Herbert, who was fascinated by Egypt. He became an Egyptologist and  financed  the excavations of Howard Carter in the Valley of the Kings for many years  – and then on November 6, 1922 Tutankhamun’s tomb was discovered, making the world aware of Lord Carnarvon, owner of Highclere Castle – Downton Abbey.

***********

After many months of watching Downton Abbey we are familiar with Lord Carnarvon’s castle, but what about Howard Cater, where did he live?

While leaving the Valley of the Kings on one of my visits I noticed a modest small house sitting between two roads on what looked like a deserted lot. Nothing about it was very inviting, but that changed when I found out who had lived there

“What is that over there?” I asked Mohamed, my guide.

“That is Howard Carter’s house; we can visit it tomorrow if you like?” When I heard his name, I asked the driver to stop – I wanted to go and see it right now.

The house is as modest on the inside as it looks on the outside. Howard Carter lived here during the years he oversaw the excavations in the Valley of the Kings. It is functional, but offers very little comfort.

Howard Carter’s life has always interested me because of his lifelong love for Egypt and his unfaltering determination and believe that one day he would find what he was looking for. And he did. On November 6, 1922 he and Lord Carnavon entered Tutankhamun’s tomb, where they found a large collection of treasures and gold.

So what do Downton Abbey and Egypt have in common? Lord Carnarvon!

RAMSES II – A MATTER OF SIZE

It is hard to imagine that Ramses II has ever been laying down instead of standing up, dominating the scene, and towering over his world…..but there is an exception.
During my first visit to Egypt part of our tour was a visit to Memphis, the capital of the Old Kingdom (around 3000 B.C.), located 12 miles south of Cairo.

There, in a museum, a beautiful limestone statue of Ramses II is laying on his back. The reason for not standing must be that his feet are missing. But even without feet, the statue still measures 33 feet. The museum in the archaeological zone of Memphis has been built to protect it.

The statue was found by Giovanni Caviglia in 1820 at the great temple of Ptah near Memphis. Mohammad Ali, the ruler of Egypt at the time, donated the statue to the British Museum. But the task of moving the colossal statue was so overwhelming that it prevented the British from taking it to England — what a lucky break for Egypt and us tourists!

Today not much is left of the Old Kingdom’s Capital. Our guide explained that since Memphis is  the place where the Nile splits up into different branches to form the Nile Delta, the climate is more humid — the reason many old monuments and history have disappeared.

But besides the museum, which is surrounded by a few huts selling souvenirs, there is a beautiful Sphinx –Egypt_11077

—– yes there are other Sphinxes besides the famous one guiding the Pyramids – unfortunately  not much is known about this one – speculations are that it was carved between 1700-1400 BC and might honor the Female Pharaoh Hatshepsut???

But with such a lovely, warm smile who needs  to know her name?Egypt_11078

EGYPT’S LOST DREAMS

article-2379657-1B049381000005DC-432_964x589[1]

Today, on the 25th of January, three years after the revolution in Egypt, we should be congratulating the Egyptian people on their new democracy – instead with horror and a heavy heart – we are watching the news.

Yesterday there were 5 bomb explosions in Cairo which left 6 people dead and over 70 wounded, creating fear for more unrest today. What went wrong? Whatever it is,  whoever is to blame, after three years, the life for most Egyptians has not improved, but has become more difficult and confusing.

The world is watching, trying to understand, and drawing the right or wrong conclusions. But how does the Egyptian man in the street, who needs to feed his family, feel? Or the mother who is worried about her children not being safe going to school; or if her son will be killed in a demonstration while voicing his believes. Do they really care what the name of the president is?

I don’t think so! They want peace. They want what they fought for in Tahrir Square three years ago – a voice, freedom of choice, dignity, a decent living, and a chance to work for all the above —- but all they got is uncertainty – uncertainty of what to do, who to follow, how to make it better.

The ousting of Mohamed Morsi last year in July, was another  moment of hope. A hope that was dashed soon after and has plunged the country into more confusion and violence.

What can the Egyptian people expect in the coming weeks and months?   Who will lead the way to make what they started three years ago a reality?  Insha-Allah  time will tell.

PHARAOHS DRANK BEER LONG BEFORE US

In case you have missed it —- the BBC announced a few days ago that a Japanese team of archeologist discovered the tomb of the Head Brewer who served an ancient court more than 3000 years ago. The wall paintings in the tomb are well-preserved and show daily life as well as religious rituals.

Brewer's tomb luxor

In Ancient Egypt beer played an important part in daily life. It was consumed by adults, children, wealthy Egyptians, and even Pharaohs. Beer was used as offerings to the Gods. Beer was used to pay wages, and in the village at Giza the workman received three rations a day as part of their pay — there was even a goddess of beer, her name was Tjenenet

Loving beer as much as I do, I think it is only right to worship Tjenenet –  yes, I drank Egyptian beer while I was visiting – it tasted sweet with a malty flavor to it, and it was always warm, I mean not chilled. It took me some time to get used to drinking warm beer   – you see in Germany, where I come from, nobody would touch a warm beer – but after drinking a few……. I forgot that in some countries beer is not cold.

The Tomb is located on the West Bank of the Nile in Luxor. It will be a while before it will be open to the public,  but if on my next visit I can see these magnificent wall paintings depicting the life of a man who was in charge of making beer, I won’t mind drinking it warm.

ABU SIMBEL – SOME MIRACLES HAPPEN TWICE

The bus, which brought us from the airport, joined other buses in a parking lot near a large hill. Once our group was together we started walking up a sandy path. Our guide told us to be patient, that we were nearly there – but there was no sign of what I had longed to see for so many years – the Temple of Abu Simbel, the Status of Ramses II…. we kept walking. It was hot, the midday sun was beating down on us and there was no shade. I felt tired. Our wake-up call had been at 4 am because the plane to come here  left at 6 am.

….but then we turned the corner – I did not feel the heat anymore, or how tired I was — I was mesmerized – there he was, Ramses II – four times! Four colossal, sitting statues were looking down on us – making us look very small —— hardly there.

IMG_7540

The Temples of Abu Simbel , yes there are two, one for Ramses II and a smaller one for his Queen Nefertari, were built around 1264 BC. The statues of Ramses II are 60 feet high and were sculptured directly from the rock. It took about 20 years to complete.

When the Aswan High Dam was being constructed (1960 -1976) the rising waters of Lake NasserIMG_7545-2 threatened to inundate these ancient temples. In answer to an appeal from the Arab Republic of Egypt, UNESCO started an international donation campaign to save the temples — and
under the UNESCO banner relocation began in 1964 by an international team of archeologists, engineers and skilled heavy equipment operators.

The entire site was carefully cut into large blocks –ABU SIMBEL MOVE up to 30 tons – dismantled, lifted, and reassembled in a new location – 195 feet higher and 600 feet back from the river. It is one of the greatest achievements of archaeological engineering in history.

Abusimbel[1]

Today looking closely at the statues there is no mark visible where the blocks were rejoined. Our guide, a well known Egyptologist, explained that when the blocks were cut apart, the sand spraying out of the equipment was carefully collected, labeled and used to seal the joints once the stones had been put back together.

Egypt2132-2

The temple in the foreground is the temple dedicated to Queen Nefertari and the goddess Hathor. She was the favorite queen of Ramses II — and above one of the doorways the inscription says “–WIFE NEFERTARI MERYETMUT FOR WHOSE SAKE THE SUN DOES SHINE”….!!!

How fortunate for the world today that in 13th Century BC there were artist capable of creating a miracle called ABU SIMBEL, and that our knowledge in the 20th Century allowed us to recreate that miracle again!

P.S. Due to an earthquake Ramses II statue to the left of the entrance lost his head and upper torso, and is now laying at his feet.IMG_7540

RAMSES II MULTIPLIED BY FOUR – IT IS A MATTER OF SIZE

RAMSES II CONFIRMED HIS POWER WITH  REPLICAS OF HIMSELF – AND HIS  STATUS CAN BE FOUND ALL OVER EGYPT STILL TODAY.  BUT IN ABU SIMBEL HIS POWER WAS MULTIPLIED BY FOUR. IT CAN’T HAVE HURT HIS EGO, BUT THESE COLOSSAL FIGURES IN FRONT OF THE TEMPLE, HAD AN ADDITIONAL PURPOSE – THEY SHOWED HIS NEIGHBORS SOUTH OF THE BORDER – IN NUBIA – WHO WAS IN CHARGE.
