PHOTO OF THE WEEK – HOW SWEET IS LOVE?

couple in egypt.jpeg

I found the artist who makes these beautiful tiles  in the Valley of the Kings. Every time I am in  Egypt I visit him – most of his tiles show trees, birds or boats- but the day he made this one I think he must have been in love!

OMAR SHARIF AND THE OTHER EGYPTIAN MEN

Omar Sharif was born in Egypt and became an international super star. Do you remember Doctor Zhivago? Women were swooning about him and still do. The other day I mentioned his name  to a friend, and  with a dreamy expression,  she said, “Oh, yes he is so sexy,  he could put his shoes under my bed anytime.”

No, not every man in Egypt is a Omar Sharif, but many come close – but I will let you see for yourself.

PHOTO OF THE WEEK – BLACK IS NOT THE ONLY COLOR

When we think of Muslim women,  black glad silhouettes come to mind. Yes, there are woman who wear black, but at least half of the women I have seen during my travels through Egypt wore colorful Jalabiyas – by the way they are worn over other clothing and taken off once the woman is at home.

Who is this guard talking to? Could it be that pharaohs have cell phones too now?

ALEXANDRIA – NEED A SPARE PART FOR YOU CAR?

Behind the Corniche in Alexandria there is an area where any spare part for any car can be found.  Street after street is packed with second-hand cars, or what is left of them.

Cars serving as spare parts are only taken apart when a customer needs a replacement  piece – that means they are dismantled as they go.

An exception are motors IMG_2641-2

and tiresIMG_2710-2

I am convinced that here you will find any spare part for any model car, regardless of the year.

GREAT SPHINX OF GIZA – ITS DIFFERENT FACES

Egypt_1780-2

The Great Sphinx is the largest monolith statue in the world. It is 241 ft long, 63 feet wide and nearly 67 feet high. It has a body of a lion, with claws and a tail, and a human head. Modern Egyptologists believe that it was built approxiamtely 2500BC by the pharaoh Khafra. It was buriedup to its nose in sand until  it was excavated by the Frenchman Emile Baraize between 1925- 1936.

As one of the most recognizable statues in the world, it does not disappoint – at night or in the daytime – standing in front, behind, or next to the Sphinx one cant’t excape its mistic and overwhelming presents – and no picture will ever do its justice  – but maybe the following photos will make you want to see for yourself one day!

NO PARKING LOT – JUST KEEPING YOUR CAR CLEAN!

Pointing to a car parked on a main street in Cairo, totally wrapped up with a protective cover, I asked my friend, “Can you park your car on the street here for a long time?”

“Oh, no – the owner will probably come back soon. Many people cover their cars like this everyday, even for just a few hours. It’s to keep them clean!”

The sand from the desert is part of life in Egypt – and car owners who are protective of their vehicles have found ways to cover them, and protect them. There are many different types of covers – here are some of them.
