WAITING FOR TOURISTS- PHOTO OF THE WEEK

The political upheaval over the last five years has reduced tourism in Egypt, but the crash  of the Russian plane over the Sinai a few month ago, resulting in  travel bans by Russia and the UK  has brought Egypt’s tourism to a collapse which stretches from the Pyramids to the beaches in Sharm El-Sheikh.

Maybe we should not let the news media scare us, because if you ever want to see Egypt without having to compete with other tourists  – the time is now – and you will have this man all to yourself – think about it!

EGYPTIAN PALM TREES TURNING INTO ARMCHAIRS

There are 2600 different type of Palm Trees in the world, most of them grow in tropical or subtropical climates, and many of them can be found in Egypt.

I love Palm trees because they always bring up images of sunshine, far away lands and beaches – equaling holidays. It was during my last visit, in a small town near Luxor, that we found a nursery, where making furniture from palm tree leaves was part of their business.

It starts with this type of palm tree – sorry I can’t tell you the name because even asking the locals drew a blank.

Once the fan like leaves are separated from the trunk of the tree,  the spine is cut out. It is flexible and strong, guaranteeing durability.IMG_0672.JPG-2

When they have been shaped into long, straight strips, holes, about two inches apart, are punched in.

After assembling the strips these beautiful armchairs are the result . No, they don’t feel hard, or scratchy – on the contrary they were so comfortable that I didn’t want to get up ……

PHOTO OF THE WEEK – WHAT A SHAME

We are fortunate that the Ancient Egyptians left us such wonders to admire as these beautiful column bases in the back courtyard in the Temple at Medina Habu on the West Bank of the Nile near Luxor

MEDINA HABU – WHERE IS THE TOILET?

Tourists are always concerned about where the bathrooms are. And it is one of the details tour guides never forget to mention – I suppose it makes people feel comfortable and avoids unnecessary delays.

The morning I visited Medina Habu* I was not with a tour, and I didn’t think about or needed a bathroom. At one moment I was passing a group of people whose guide was explaining the meaning of the battle on the wall in front of them. Since I had been too lazy to read about it in the book my friends had given before leaving that morning, I sneaked close to listen.

When the guide had finished we stood in silence contemplating what we saw and what he had told us, until a woman’s voice broke the silence: “Where were the toilets?”

A little irritated the guide answered: “They are outside the gate lady, you’ll have to wait until we leave.”

“No, I mean where did  the Ancient Egyptians go when they came here? Did they have bathrooms then?”

Toilets must not have been on the program, because the guide hesitated before answering: “Medina Habu is one of the few places where you can still see one.”

“Really?” a chorus asked “Can you show us?”

As I said, I was not part of the group, but wanting to see the toilet too I pretended I was. While leading us away from the main building to an area covered with broken stones and rubble he explained that here had been the bath houses. When we came to a small enclosure, four low brick walls with an opening where the door must have been, he said” “Just look inside, that is the one toilet that is left.”And one by one everybody peaked in.

I was astounded how little had changed since the Ancient Egyptians had invented the toilet  — because today in France, and other parts of Europe, there are toilets which look just like it —- and they are still in use!

PYRAMIDS’S HIDDEN SECRETS?

Egypt detects ‘impressive’ anomaly in Giza pyramids

Updated 3:56 pm, Tuesday, November 10, 2015

French architect Jean-Pierre Houdin, right, and Egypt's Antiquities Minister Mamdouh el-Damaty, second right, stand near the limestone rocks that are displayed on the screen showing varying temperatures represented by different colors with live footage from a thermal camera, in front of the Khufu pyramid in Giza, Egypt, Monday, Nov. 9, 2015. Egypt's Antiquities Ministry says a scanning project in the Giza pyramids has identified thermal anomalies, including one in the largest pyramid, built by Cheops, known locally as Khufu. CAIRO (AP) — Two weeks of new thermal scanning in Egypt’s Giza pyramids have identified anomalies in the 4,500 year-old burial structures, including a major one in the largest pyramid, the Antiquities Ministry announced Monday.

Antiquities Minister Mamdouh el-Damaty and technical experts working on the project showed the higher temperature being detected in three specific adjacent stones at the bottom of the pyramid in a live thermal camera presentation to journalists.

The scanning showed “a particularly impressive one (anomaly) located on the Eastern side of the Khufu pyramid at ground level,” the ministry said in a statement. The largest of the three Giza pyramids is known locally as Khufu and internationally as Cheops.

The thermal scanning was carried out at all times of the day, including during sunrise, as the sun heats the structures from the outside, and then during sunset as the pyramids are cooling down. The speed of the heating and cooling phases is being used to uncover “hypotheses” such as empty areas in the pyramids, internal air currents, or different building materials used.

“The first row of the pyramid’s stones are all uniform, then we come here and find that there’s a difference in the formation,” said el-Damaty, pointing at the three stones showing higher temperatures.

While inspecting the area, el-Damaty said they found “that there is something like a small passage in the ground that you can see, leading up to the pyramids ground, reaching an area with a different temperature. What will be behind it?”

Other heat anomalies were detected in the upper half of the pyramid that the experts said need to be investigated further.

El-Damaty invited all Egyptologists, especially those interested in ancient Egyptian architecture, to join in the research and help come up with ideas on what could be behind the anomalies.

The pyramids, located on the outskirts of Cairo, are one of the major tourist attractions in the country. The pyramids, which were used as sacred burial structures, were built in the fourth Pharaonic dynasty. The great pyramid is the oldest and only surviving monument of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

The next time you go to Egypt there might be something new to see – the scanning tells a new story!
