EGYPTIAN PALM TREES TURNING INTO ARMCHAIRS

There are 2600 different type of Palm Trees in the world, most of them grow in tropical or subtropical climates, and many of them can be found in Egypt.

I love Palm trees because they always bring up images of sunshine, far away lands and beaches – equaling holidays. It was during my last visit, in a small town near Luxor, that we found a nursery, where making furniture from palm tree leaves was part of their business.

It starts with this type of palm tree – sorry I can’t tell you the name because even asking the locals drew a blank.

Once the fan like leaves are separated from the trunk of the tree,  the spine is cut out. It is flexible and strong, guaranteeing durability.IMG_0672.JPG-2

When they have been shaped into long, straight strips, holes, about two inches apart, are punched in.

After assembling the strips these beautiful armchairs are the result . No, they don’t feel hard, or scratchy – on the contrary they were so comfortable that I didn’t want to get up ……

and for Eco lovers they are a dream come true!
